Thirsty?

Health specialists tell us that one of the mainstays of a daily regimen is hydration.  The simple act of drinking plenty of water throughout the day enhances the capacity of the body to do its work.  The effects of dehydration - lethargy, fatigue, mood changes - seem to appear suddenly just as one is "feeling thirsty."  My observation is that too many pastoral ministers suffer thirst.  It has many sources often overlooked and neglected because the minister is busy.   Discouragement, tense relationships, lack of predictability, unrealistic workloads, and fear for the future slowly erode one's capacity to keep close to the vision of her or his call.  For some, a day comes when they feel like they are "dying of thirst."

The Taking Stock Retreat is designed for those who understand their need for refreshment - now.  It is a structured retreat involving reflective exercises, conversations, and individual and group prayer.  It offers a framework for ministers to remember, to sort and evaluate, and to make decisions that harness the energy and promise of their vocational calls to pastoral service.  My role as director is to help clear the way so that participants might see what their experience reveals and what they might do to live the ministry refreshed.

The Taking Stock Retreat is a structured experience for pastoral ministers to look at what is happening in their lives and to be more intentional about making decisions that sustain their call to ministry.  The quiet beauty of the Guesthouse is a perfect setting for this holy work.  The activities we use provide a framework for reflection as people draw wisdom from their experience.   The retreat begins on Sunday evening with Vespers in the Abbey Church and concludes with lunch on Thursday.
