At 7 p.m. on September 20, 2009, Msgr. Bruce Harbert, executive director of ICEL, spoke on "The Missal's Image of God" in the Stephen B. Humphrey Theater at Saint John's. Rev. Carl P. Daw, Jr., executive director of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, responded. Following the presentations, the two speakers responded to questions from audience members.

The following day, Msgr. Harbert and Rev. Daw visited School of Theology·Seminary classes. Members of the SOT·Sem community, and the monastic community, had additional opportunities to interact with both speakers.
About the Presenters

Msgr. Bruce Harbert is the Executive Director of the International Committee on English in the Liturgy (ICEL), which has prepared English translations of Latin liturgical books and texts that will eventually be submitted to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments for the Holy See’s recognitio. Msgr. Harbert received his S.T.L. from the Pontifical Augustinianum Institute in 1982 and S.T.B. from the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1978. Msgr. Harbert’s principal ecclesiastical appointments include his current one in 2002 as Executive Director of ICEL; Priest in Charge, Parish of Saint Anne, Streetly, West Midlands from 1996-2002; Catholic Chaplain, the University of Sussex from 1983-1989; and Associate Pastor, Parish of Caterham, Surrey, 1981-1983. He was ordained in 1979. Msgr. Harbert has taught as the Paluch Lecturer at University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, 2002; he has lectured at Saint Mary's College, Oscott, and Mansfield, Merton, and Worcester Colleges, Oxford, 1968-1974. Msgr. Harbert has numerous publications within his fields of specialization.
The Reverend Dr. Carl P. Daw Jr., is an Episcopal priest and writer who was appointed as the Executive Director of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada in 1996. This ecumenical and international organization has its headquarters at Boston University School of Theology, where Dr. Daw serves as an Adjunct Professor of Hymnology in the Master of Sacred Music program. In addition to his experience as a parish priest and university chaplain, Dr. Daw has served as a retreat leader, speaker, workshop leader, and guest lecturer at many conferences and seminaries throughout the United States. He was a consultant member of the Text Committee for The Hymnal 1982, to which he contributed a number of translations, metrical paraphrases, and original hymns. His texts have subsequently appeared in most denominational and ecumenical hymnals published in the United States and Canada. They also can be found in hymnals in England, Scotland, and Australia and have been translated into Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. He has written a variety of articles related to liturgy and music and has reviewed related materials for The St. Luke's Journal of Theology, The Anglican Theological Review, and The Hymn.
