Liturgy has always been central to Benedictine life. At Saint John’s, the study of the liturgy and its renewal have been central to the mission of the school since Virgil Michel, OSB, began his pioneering work in the American liturgical movement in the 1920s.

The Master of Arts in Liturgical Studies draws on this history, introducing students to the historical, theological, and pastoral dimensions of the church’s liturgical traditions, the nature of the ritual process, and the relationship between culture and liturgy. Academically specialized, it presumes a solid background in theology and scripture and prepares students for service in liturgical formation, liturgical ministries, liturgical leadership, or further academic study.

This program emphasizes the necessity of integrating academic work with practice. Study of the liturgy is always situated in the context of a praying, worshipping community here at Saint John’s and in the wider church.

For specific degree requirements, including information about courses and program outcomes, see pages 12-13 of our Academic Catalog. For information about procedures for demonstrating reading proficiency in a foreign language, graduate papers or a thesis, and comprehensive examinations, see our Student Handbook.
