Social Work Club Minutes

A. Introductions
     1. Club president, Nicole Kempenich, welcomed everyone to the first Social Work Club meeting  of the year!
     2. General group introductions

B. Questions and Answers
     1. Responded to questions regarding what a social worker does
     2. Briefly talked about the measures taken last year to possibly close the major
          A. The major received very strong support from faculty, the community, and students
          B. The issue has been tabled by administration
          C. These actions did not reflect questions about the quality of education social work majors receive - we have a very good program!

     3. Questions about if current first years are guaranteed to be able to graduate with a social work major
          A. Officers weren’t sure at the meeting, but found out that current first year students are guaranteed to be able to graduate as social work majors

C. Old Business
     1. Involvement at the HCC went very well, a lot of people expressed interest
     2. Class Representatives Election
          A. Explained how the officer positions run from spring semester to fall, so current officers will finish after this semester and new officers will be elected in December
          B. Starting this year, each class not represented on the executive board elects a class representative to join the board and serve as a liaison between the club and their class and to do other tasks as needed
          C. There will be a special election for 1 junior, sophomore, and first year for this semester
          D. We will elect class representatives at the next meeting

D. New Business
     1. Official Club Roster: passed out sign-up sheet to be on club roster. You must be on the roster if you want to be able to vote in club elections.
     2. SWRK Club will sponsor Trick-or-Treat so Others Can Eat in St. Joseph on November 1st at 2pm. More information will come later.
     3. Take Back the Night, a march and rally to end sexual violence against women, children, and families will be September 26th, 2008 in St. Cloud. SWRK club will be promoting this event and contacting Anna Maries about the possibility of co-sponsoring it.
     4. Cultural Plunge
          A. Club decided to have one day that is more focused on experiencing different cultures and a separate service day instead of combining them.
          B. The Cultural Plunge will take place sometime between Long Weekend and Thanksgiving
          C. Members brainstormed things to do at the Cultural Plunge
          D. The Cultural Plunge usually fills up fast. Priority will be given to Social Work majors and active club members
     5. SWRK club will sponsor a panel of social workers. Let us know of any specific areas of interest you have.
     6. Email the club or talk to an officer (Nicole Kempenich, Ashley Strobel, Meghan Current, or Stacey Endres) with any ideas or events you think the club might want to promote!

Next meeting: Thursday, September 25th at 7:00 P.M.

 

The mission of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University Social Work Club is to provide opportunities for interested students to learn more about social justice through education and experience. It is also the club's goal to foster awareness and promote involvement in current issues related to the area of social work.
