Minnesota Literacy Council is seeking highly motivated women and men for the Summer Reads Program, a full-time, eight-week service opportunity to promote the literacy skills of K-3 school children.

AmeriCorps*Vista (Volunteers In Service To America) members serve in Minneapolis and St. Paul Public Summer Schools as classroom aides during the morning, and facilitate fun enrichment activities at community sites (Boys and Girls Clubs, Public Libraries, Park and Recreation Centers) during the afternoon. Within the framework of these established programs, you will conduct one-to-one reading sessions, fun group activities, and outdoor games to strengthen the skills of emerging readers.

Responsibilities
Tutor elementary school children one-to-one in reading and writing. Work with a partner to plan, create and implement enrichment activities that are both educational and engaging for groups of children. Work with teachers, librarians, and other staff to complement their programs effectively. Participate in weekly in-service training to learn about multi-cultural issues, behavior management, tutoring techniques, and other relevant topics. Diligently complete weekly paperwork to provide data for program evaluation.

Qualifications
18 years or older.  Must have energy to work with enthusiastic children eight hours per day. Must be self-motivated, assertive and be able to work independently and with others. Cannot have another job while serving with Summer Reads. Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the U.S.

Job Responsibilities
Specifically, the intern will schedule site visits, assist with preparation and participate in the visits, participate in the grant recommendation meetings, and assist with preparing information for Committee and Board meetings. The successful candidate will take part in reviewing and tracking interim and final grant reports for current grantees. The intern will conduct research on issues and trends related to social determinants of health, immigrant integration, and community connectedness. The intern will assist with the preparation of an all-grantee meeting for the Healthy Together initiative with focus on social connectedness. Intern will update the resources for various purposes (tool kit, portal, resource center, policy support, leadership development). The intern will actively participate in foundation team meetings and work collaboratively with other team members to help achieve foundation objectives and successfully carry out projects. The intern¹s time will work predominately with the Healthy Together: Creating Community with New Americans program, but will also assist with updating resources (tool kit, portal) for the Growing Up Healthy: Kids and Communities program (up to 30 percent).

Accountabilities Research and resource development

Job Requirements
College student pursing a Baccalaureate degree in health or social sciences, public affairs, or human services at accredited academic institution located in Minnesota. Formal contact with university where student is enrolled. GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale. Interest in philanthropy. Ability to conduct secondary research and make formal presentations. Excellent written and oral communications skills. Demonstrated interpersonal skills for working with foundation staff and other Blue Cross employees at all levels, applicants and grantees from diverse populations and communities. Purpose of the Position:

• Recruit, orient, train and supervise volunteers, interns and other 2-1-1 phone responders to ensure appropriate referrals and best possible service for consumers.

• Oversee development and dissemination of community services publications.

• Develop and maintain weekly schedule ensuring coverage of 2-1-1 information and referral over-the-phone service.

• Participate in community initiatives that relate to United Way’s identified priorities, as assigned.

• Maintain ongoing communication with statewide 2-1-1 network of information and referral services.

"Working to End Poverty in the United States"

Job Summary: The individual will work on ongoing Catholic Campaign Human Development (CCHD) projects that are designed to break the cycle of poverty. An additional objective of the position is to grow in understanding of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, and to learn and refine social action skills while growing in faith. 

The National Conference of Catholic Bishops established the CCHD, the Catholic Church's domestic anti-poverty program, to raise funds to support organized groups of white and minority poor, to develop their economic strength and political power.  Also, the CCHD educates people about today's problems in order to lead to new approaches that will promote a greater sense of solidarity.   Their philosophy emphasizes empowerment and participation for the poor.  By helping the poor to participate in the decisions and actions that affect their lives, they will be empowered to move beyond poverty.

Major Responsibilities 
• Become familiar with CCHD resources and other resources and funding opportunities available for   local initiatives/programs that focus on issues of poverty and social justice
• Research and identify initiatives and programming in the areas of poverty and social justice and
 develop conclusions as to the feasibility and applicability of those initiatives or projects for local
 implementation
• Assist the Director of Social Concerns in implementing a public education campaign to promote
 poverty education in parishes of the dioceses.  This will include writing communication/education  articles, making parish presentations, and facilitating discussion.
• Attend National Orientation in Washington DC June 1-4, 2008 (all travel, lodging and meal
 expenses will be paid for).
• Participate in regularly scheduled conference calls from the national conference office of the Capital Campaign Human Development (CCHD) to share project experiences and to reflect upon the projects accomplished in light of Catholic Social Teaching and their faith
• Submit a final report and evaluation of the internship experience and accomplishments
