Students of the CSB/SJU social work program have the opportunity to work with individual faculty advisers. Together they develop research projects, honors theses, and field practum experiences that can become an important part of their career preparation. Faculty members take a strong interest in the students’ internships, offering guidance and support throughout the entire internship experience.
In recent years CSB/SJU graduates with degrees in social work have been drawn to a wide variety of occupations. Some of these positions are school social workers, probation officers, hospital social workers, violence prevention specialists, and housing services managers. A recent social work graduate is even the current mayor of St. Joseph, Minn. The liberal arts sequence complements the social work program and enables graduates to be competent in a diverse range of human experiences. Students are eligible for social work licensure upon completion of their degree after passing the State of Minnesota Social Work Licensing Exam.
CSB/SJU social work students have access to many opportunities to get involved with social work issues that enable them to be more skilled and confident about their future in the social work environment. These opportunities include the VISTO program (Volunteers in Service to Others), service trips over spring break and throughout the year, and junior and senior social work practica. The social work program provides students with the experience necessary to succeed in future careers.
