Student Development Coordinate Mission and Vision

The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University Student Development divisions, informed by our Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts and residential tradition, understand student learning as dynamic and interactive within the academic community and the holistically developing individual. We provide opportunities for young women and men to become more aware of their responsibility to promote the common good, to understand themselves as gendered people, and to fully engage as reflective leaders in an increasingly intercultural and global community.

Student Development Learning Outcomes (SDLO)

Persistence and Academic Achievement: Academic success, relate knowledge to daily life, pursuit of lifelong learning

Critical Thinking and Cognitive Complexity: Reflective thinking, effective reasoning, intellectual flexibility, problem solving, ability to assess assumptions and biases of self and others, etc.

Intercultural Competence: Ability to engage, learn from and work with people whose cultural identity is different from one’s own (Intercultural Directions Council definition), understanding and appreciating human differences, social responsibility, identity development, etc.

Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Maturation: Realistic self-appraisal, self-esteem, ethics and integrity, relationships, independence and interdependence, team work, etc.

Gender Awareness: Ability to view world through lens of gender, understand gender as important aspect of identity development, understanding of social constructs of gender, Presidential Task Force on Gender 

Spiritual Growth: Spiritual awareness, understanding of different faiths and faith traditions, understanding spirituality as aspect of identity

Service and Leadership for the Common Good: Sense of responsibility, commitment to community, engagement in principled dissent, effective in leadership

Developing a Meaningful Life Purpose: Living a purposeful and satisfying life, balanced leisure pursuits, maintain health and wellness, vocational competence, career decision making, plan for achieving goals, acquisition of skills and knowledge necessary for career
