Senate positions receive new titles, boards

3/22/2007 – SJU students passed a Constitutional amendment Thursday which assigned new titles to seven SJS positions and new board locations to two SJS positions. Amendment text...

The amendment was moved by Judicial Board Chairman Barry Griffin, and passed the SJS on March 19, 2007 by a vote of 12-5-1. The changes were endorsed by the Constitutional Review Committee, consisting of senators Barry Griffin, Brett Saladin, Mark Sonkin, Kurt Sorensen, Michael Swanberg, and Nicholas Truso. Treasurer Brendon Murn abstained from the vote, and President Kevin May cast a vote (in this event, the president’s vote would affect the outcome).

Griffin stated that the new names would better reflect the purpose of the positions, but the real benefit arises in the new board assignments, which allow for increased functionality in each role.

Senators opposed to the amendment argued against various name changes, including that of the new JEC & Campus Events Representative. Regent Nicholas Truso also objected because the motion would come into effect immediately upon student body’s ratification, rather than at the turn of the semester once new senators had been elected to the revised positions.

The amendments revive a similar failed motion from February 20, 2007, which sought to increase efficiency by restructuring board positions and titles. Unlike the failed amendment, which proposed the elimination of three senate offices, the new motion would not eliminate any positions.

The SJS thanks the students for their electoral participation, and reminds all students about upcoming General Elections, scheduled for April 13, 2007.
