3/19/2007 - The Saint John’s Senate released the results of the Recycling Policy Investigation and Advisory Committee report on March 19, 2007. The invitatory committee was established by Senator Kurt Sorenson to investigate the rumor of the lack of recycling on campus at Saint John’s University. The investigation was initiated on January 19, 2007 and was concluded at the end of February, 2007.
Saint John’s University currently contracts services through Waste Management, at a total cost of $11,076 a year. The current policy covers 32 locations on campus, including the regions of the Prep School, Abbey, Liturgical Press, Ecumenical Institute, House of Prayer, and the Parish Center. Recycling was found to usually be picked up on Mondays whereas the garbage was found to be picked up 3 or more times a week.
The investigation through numerous experiences determined that Saint John’s University does have a functional recycling program. However, the program faces major issues. The report cited little student knowledge of the program and unclear labeling of recycling bins as major factors behind a lack of support for recycling on the Saint John’s campus. To curb the recent problem, the Recycling Policy Investigation and Advisory Committee recommended replacing labels on the exteriors of outdoor trash receptacles to reduce confusion. The report also recommended that an effort be made to further educate students and staff of the current program and to place more recycling receptacles in parking lots and campus buildings.
