Johnnie Day a time for pride

STUDENTS BUY OVER 1,200 "JOHNNIES" SHIRTS

The Saint John’s Senate (SJS) hosted Johnnie Day on Oct. 2, 2007. As part of the yearly Homecoming Spirit Week, Johnnie Day featured a celebration at the Tommy Hall basement’s Rat Hole, and sales of the popular yearly “Johnnies” T-shirts at Sexton Commons.

This year’s shirts, navy with light blue lettering, continued a 4-year-old tradition at Saint John’s University (SJU), mirroring a slightly older “Bennies” shirts tradition at the College of Saint Benedict (CSB). With over 1,200 shirts sold on the first day, Oct. 2 marked the most popular Johnnie Day since its inception. Many students commented on the high quality of the shirts.

The shirts were printed at The T Spot, a new on-campus screen printing company located at CSB. Managed by Entrepreneurial Scholars Colin Dart and Nikki Nelson, the company completed its first order with the 2007 “Johnnies” shirts. Due to high demand, additional shirts have been ordered for a sale at Taste of Saints on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007.

At the Celebration of Johnnie Day held in the Rat Hole, the SJS offered free root beer floats and offered door prizes worth a total of $900 to attendees. In a grand prize drawing, SJU first-year Brandon Boquist claimed a new iPod nano.

Revenues from “Johnnies” shirt sales will go to the SJS’s generated fund, paying for purchased items such as senate polo shirts, nametags, jackets, and other supplies used by individual senators in and out of meetings with administrators. Johnnie Day is included in the yearly SJS budget.

In continuing a tradition of SJU pride, next year’s Johnnie Day is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008.
