Welcome to Saint John's Physical Plant Department

Our mission is to provide a safe, resourceful, comfortable and pleasing environment for our students, our employees, our monastic residents and our guests.

Though Saint John’s is situated on a 2,450-acre campus, the developed, “inner” campus is approximately 150 acres of maintained grounds and/or playing fields – and corporately holds 103 buildings.  The Physical Plant Division provides utilities, custodial and maintenance services for the following:

The Physical Plant Department maintains and operates this plant with the following elements:

• Paint & Finishing Shop

The Physical Plant Department is under the direction of Bill Boom.

The Carpentry, Locksmith and Paint & Finishing Shop, directed by Gary Jorgensen, takes care of the basic building's structure and their accessories. This includes masonry, carpentry, roofs, fixed furniture, locks, keys, hardware, painting, wall & furniture finishes and glass/screen replacements.

The Plumbing, HVAC and Preventive Maintenance Shops, managed by Gary Jorgensen, specialize in plumbing, heating, air-conditioning, ventilation, sheet metal, temperature control, preventive maintenance and the steam, water and waste distribution systems.

The Electric Shop handles lighting and power systems, elevators, electronics, fire detection systems, electrical control systems, refrigeration and the electrical distribution system, as well as the voice, data and video cable system. The Electric Shop is also managed by Gary Jorgensen.

The Physical Plant offices are housed on the renovated second floor of a brick building constructed in 1903.  It was one of the first buildings on campus designed by Father Raphael Knapp, O.S.B.
