Author Victoria Young will be at SJU Oct. 24-25 to discuss her new book "Saint John's Abbey Church: Marcel Breuer and the Creation of a Modern Sacred Space." She will give a talk Oct. 24 in the Abbey Chapter House at 7:45 p.m. followed by a book signing. She will also lead a tour of the church on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 10 a.m., followed by a book signing in the Saint John's University Bookstore.
Young, a professor of modern architectural history and chair of the art history department at the University of St. Thomas, scheduled the visit to correspond with the release of the book. The book is about how the monks of Saint John's Abbey set out to build a new worship space in the 1950s to accommodate a growing campus that re-envisioned what a church could be and set a worldwide standard for midcentury religious design.
Young will also read selections from her book on Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church Lutheran, Minneapolis.
