Sustainable Revolving Loan Funds
Both CSB and SJU passed "Sustainable Revolving Loan Funds" of $100,000. These funds will grant loans to sustainable cost saving projects. Savings will be invested back into the fund until 120% of them are paid off. Anyone may make a proposal. SJU approved its first project, a lighting retrofit for the swimming pool. It will pay for itself over 3.4 years by saving on energy costs and maintenance. All approved projects and savings will be posted on the website.
Saint John's received a $30,000 grant from Target to advance campus sustainability goals. The funds have been committed to help underwrite the Year of Sustainability and a water metering study. The sustainability office plans to create a website to track grant money expenditures
In an effort to reduce unnecessary waste, carbon emissions, practice stewardship, and in response to student, staff, and faculty concerns, St. Ben's is working on plans to drastically reduce plastic bottled water starting in the fall of 2010.
CSB facilities and maintenance installed 3 hydration stations. One is located in Mary commons, the other two will be placed in Gorecki and the HCC. We hope the convenience enables people to stop using bottled water.
CSB and SJU are participating in Recyclemania 2010: a friendly competition among colleges and universities across the nation. From now through April, do your part to decrease your garbage and increase your recycling. Pitch in and keep an eye out for the blue bins!
CSB Passes Sustainability Resolution:
(The) "College of Saint Benedict Student Senate fully supports and is fully committed to the sustainability goals set by the institution and will work with the administration, faculty, staff, students, and community to enact meaningful changes that accurately represent the institutional commitment to sustainability and the Benedictine values of stewardship, justice, and moderation."
The 2010 Campus Energy Challenge is a month long conservation competition. The student housing buildings compete to achieve the greatest electricity percentage reduction in energy use by the end of the month. The building that reduced the most wins a party.
