Make it Your Room

We are happy you have decided to participate in the St. John's residential life program by living on campus. Your residence hall at St. John's is your "home away from home" for nine months. We want you to have a safe, comfortable and enjoyable stay in our residence halls. We hope you feel "at home" while you are living here. In order to make your room safe, as well as comfortable, we have set some guidelines within the restrictions of school policies. Before you and your roommate move in, you should go over the guidelines, decide what to bring, discuss your needs and the cost involved in personalizing your room. Formulating a plan for decorating and arranging the room and discussing a budget is a good place to start. Studies have shown that students who are comfortable and happy in their housing situation are more likely to return to campus housing and their attitudes towards academics and socialization are more positive. With this in mind, please read the following for guidelines in personalizing your room at St. John's.

What the University Provides

All rooms in residence halls at SJU are furnished with sinks, beds, desks, chairs, wastebaskets, bookshelves, drapes/shades and closets with shelves.

Dressers are not provided; however, closets do have shelves for storage.  The shelves are very deep.

Thomas Hall
These closets have 5 shelves.  They are spaced roughly 8.5 inches apart.  Starting about chest level, the shelves stop and there is an open area 41 inches tall.  This space is the same depth and width as the shelves, just much taller.  There is also a small rod across the top of this open space for possibly more hanger space, but probably not much.

Mary Hall
There are 6 shelves in the Mary Hall closets.  They are spaced roughly 8" apart. There is a bottom space from the floor to the 1st shelve that is about 18" high. The space from the top shelf to the ceiling is about 15".

We encourage students to invest in storage containers that can be used as pull out drawers on the shelves.  Under the bed storage containers are also useful.

Recycling baskets and wastebaskets are provided.

Mattress Sizes

  • All mattresses are extra long (39" x 80")
  • Water beds are not allowed in residence halls at SJU.

What You Can Bring

Carpet and Furniture
All rooms are fully carpeted, which helps insulate the room from noise and cold and it can make the room more attractive. Many students bring sofas and chairs. Students are reminded that only lofts rented from College Products, formerly Campus Lofts, Inc., can be used on the SJU Campus.  Please note that students are not allowed to remove University furniture from their rooms.  Please plan accordingly. With a little pre-planning, you can make your room homey, safe and comfortable.

Posters/wall hangings
You may hang posters, pictures, etc. on the walls. Do not use nails or screws on the walls, doors, etc. in your room.

If you plan to hang anything on the walls, please use 3M Command adhesive products only.  Please do not use colored sticky adhesive gum products, which leave marks on the walls.  Tape residue must be cleaned off the walls when you move out. (Mr. Clean erasers work nicely to clean marks off the walls.)  Charges for repairing holes on walls, doors and ceilings caused by nails, tacks or screws , as well as other damages to the rooms and university furnishings are charged equally to the room occupants.

Minnesota law prohibits the removal of traffic and/or street signs. They are not permitted in residence halls. Please do not bring them to campus. Signs will be confiscated by Life Safety if found in campus housing.

Pets
Pets, with the exception of fish, are not allowed in any residence on campus. Students may have aquariums in their rooms, but are reminded that security locks are placed on all residences during extended vacations , making it difficult for anyone to enter a room to feed fish. If you plan to set up an aquarium please keep this in mind.

Plants
Plants add color to a room and help reduce odors. A healthy assortment of plants in a room makes it come alive. If you don't have a "green thumb" consider plants that require low maintenance. Check with your local green house to find out what plants do well in a residence hall room. The campus bookstore and the university green house also sell plants. Watch for posters advertising plants sales from these establishments.

Computers
Students are encouraged to bring computers. All student rooms are wired directly to our campus LAN.  Computer labs are available throughout the residence halls and the campus area.

TV
St. John's has its own cable TV system.  There are cable outlets in every residence area.  (Satellite dishes are not allowed in any residence area.)  The student radio station, KJNB, operates through the cable system.

Refrigerators
Small refrigerators are permitted in residence halls. Full size refrigerators are not permitted.  You may bring your own small refrigerator.

Other Electrical Appliances
Students may bring radios, stereos, televisions, VCRs, shavers, typewriters, electric clocks, fans, irons, heating pads , electric blankets and toothbrushes, calculators and computers to their rooms. Please note that air conditioners are not permitted in SJU Residence Halls.  If you plan to bring an appliance not listed please contact the Housing Office first.

Only two types of extension cords are allowed in residential areas. A surge protector device with U.L. labels on it or an extension cord with a circuit breaker/fuse built in; this also needs to have a U.L. tag on it.

Weapons
Weapons of any kind, including toy guns, are not allowed on the St. John's campus.

Modifications to the Room

No residence on campus may be structurally modified in any way. Students cannot paint, panel or build walls.

Cooking in the Room

Cooking, other than the preparation of snacks, is restricted to areas with kitchens. Stoves are available in most residence halls. Students living in the residence halls are required to be on a meal contract program. Microwaves, coffee pots and other small appliances are also allowed in student rooms. Hotplates are not allowed. Students are reminded of the dangers of leaving any small appliance on while unattended. Candles, incense, and halogen lights/lamps are not allowed on campus housing.
