Retreat Leaders

Thank you for your interest in being a retreat leader with Saint John's University Campus Ministry! Rooted in Benedictine spirituality, the retreats program seeks to provide structured spaces for students to grow in their individual and communal faith lives. Caring, committed leaders are vital to the success of our retreats. It is the leaders who bring the prayers, discussions and activities to life!

Our retreat leader application process is structured a bit differently this year, in an effort to get as many students involved as possible. There will be a general retreat leader application and interview process for all interested students. After the interviews are complete, the Campus Ministry staff will place students on teams for each of the five retreats. Specific roles for the First Year Retreat Experience (FYRE) and the Reveal Sophomore Service Retreat teams will also be assigned on the onset. See below for more information on each retreat, available roles and the application timeline.

Please know we have a limited number of retreat leadership positions, and the Campus Ministry staff is committed to helping all students interested in ministry find ways to be involved in our work. Thank you again for your time and interest in the retreats program! We are excited for the year ahead.

Peace,

Jessie Bazan, Director of Retreats & Social Outreach
Br. Cassian Hunter, Benedictine Intern

Retreat Leader Qualities

Retreat leaders come from different faith traditions and leadership backgrounds, and all are at different points in their faith journeys. There is no one "type" of retreat leader. Anyone who feels called to accompany others along their faith journey is welcome to apply. Campus Ministry is especially looking for retreat leaders who are:

  • Committed to living out Benedictine practices in their lives, especially the practices of hospitality, listening, prayer and community life.
  • Eager to engage retreatants and fellow leaders of all backgrounds.
  • Open to leading and participating in various forms of prayer.
  • Energetic and fun!

Retreat Leader Commitments

Retreat leaders commit to:

  • Pray for their retreatants and fellow leaders.
  • Be present and engaged for the duration of all team meetings and the retreat day/weekend.
  • Be willing to offer ideas for the retreat schedule and content (e.g. prayers, activities, talks, small group time, etc.) Equally important is a willingness to cooperate with the final decisions of the Retreat Director and Student Directors.
  • Help promote the retreat around CSB and SJU.
  • Pay the $30 leader registration fee (for FYRE and Reveal only).

  • Applications are now being accepted and must be turned in by Saturday, September 10th, 2016. When you fill out your application, please also be sure to sign up for an interview time slot.
