Through a power point presentation Beth and John discussed with the group the different generations that are currently in the workplace with a focus on millennial employees. To start the presentation Beth and John gave a short overview of the different generations that are in the workplace and what events shaped these generations. They explained that it is helpful to recognize the traits of your own generation to help understand how your traits will interact or react to the traits of the millennial generation.
Participants were then asked to discuss their perceptions of millennials, and then reviewed a list of common perceptions about millennials. They also talked about the fact that in general parents of millennials are also more involved. Through the discussion it became clear that many of the perceptions about millennials could be viewed as both a positive and a negative.
To end the presentation Beth and John gave some tips on what works well when working with millennials. At work millennials need direction, structure and stimulation. Some suggestions included giving concise directions, breaking projects into smaller tasks, and having a variety of tasks that can be worked on at once. Participants seemed to leave with a better understanding of the traits of the millennial students and how to work with them.
