April 10, 2003

SELT HELP Session:
How to Communicate with your Peers Effectively
  • Thursday, April 10, 2003, Gatewood Dining Room, Main, CSB
  • 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. (snacks served)

Kelly Schackmann, CSB Resident Director, presented this session for student employees, with some emphasis on students who are supervisors.  The interactive session focused on: 

  • speaking skills
  • non-verbal skills
  • listening skills, and
  • supervisory tips.

Approximately 40 student employees attended this event and the response to the session was excellent.

March 20, 2003:

FERPA and Employment References, 8:15 to 10:00 A.M., Alumni Lounge, SJU

Presenters:  Rebecca Rawe, CSB Resident Director; Julie Gruska, CSB/SJU Registrar; and Nadine Schnettler, CSB/SJU Associate Director of Human Resources

Becky provided participants with an overview of FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. Julie explained how FERPA relates to students, staff and faculty at CSB/SJU.  Nadine presented information on current law on employment references.

A video tape of this session is available in both student employment offices.

Back by popular demand, this session for student employees, provided an interactive panel discussion on "how to present yourself to employers".  CSB and SJU alumni/ae were panel members.

November 14, 2002: 

Conflict Resolution Roundtable for Students who are Supervisors - 4:00 to 6:00 P.M., Quad 264, Centenary Room, SJU. 

This session is for CSB or SJU students only.

Rebecca Rawe, CSB Resident Director and Shannon Altrich-Olson, Costume Assistant for the Theater Department facilitated a discussion on conflict.  Theme:  What are some conflicts that you face in your day to day work environment and how do you resolve them?

November 13, 2002:

Rebecca Rawe, CSB Resident Director and Shannon Altrich-Olson, Costume Assistant for the Theater Department will facilitate a discussion on conflict. Theme: What are some conflicts that you face in your day to day work environment and how do you resolve them?

October through December, 2002

SELT Book Discussion - “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader: Becoming the Person Others Will Want to Follow” by John Maxwell.

Maxwell asserts that a leader’s development comes from learning the laws of leadership, which are the tools for how leadership works. To develop the highest level of leadership, one must develop leadership character qualities from the inside out.

“If you can become the leader you ought to be on the inside, you will be able to become the leader you want to be on the outside.”

September 18, 2002:

Advanced Customer Service - 7:00 to 9:00 P.M., Teresa Reception Center Board Room, CSB.

Greg Brandt, Student Activities and Leadership Peer Trainer, and Shannon Altrich-Olson, Costume Assistant presented an interactive session on customer service. The session included group activities, discussion, and videos from the Connections video series from Noel Levitz.

April, 2002 through September, 2002:

Book Discussion - "Big Questions, Worthy Dreams" by Sharon Parks.

In collaboration with the SJU Vocation Project, employees of CSB and SJU discussed the philosophy and the practical approach to mentoring of young adults.  Copies of this book are available in both Student Employment Offices.
