Best Practices for Supervisors

Description of Course

Through interactive discussion, participants will discuss several scenarios specific to supervising students at CSB/SJU.  For example, one area of challenge is the issue of the use of cell phones (texting) and access of Facebook while students are working.  Participants will learn strategies to keep employees focused on work.

Communication and Intercultural Interactions in the Workplace

Creating Successful Relationships with Your Peers

Interpersonal communication is often one of the most challenging aspects of any job or workplace. To communicate successfully we need to find a balanced approach to dealing with difficult people or conversations.  Most of us have heard about “I” statements and we know about passive, aggressive, and assertive communication—therefore, let’s move from those topics to the fascinating world of workplace personalities.  Do you understand the people you work with?  In this one hour course, participants will learn about workplace personalities and tips on how to effectively communicate with different workplace personalities.

Delegating for Employee Empowerment

We will explore the challenges and risks of delegation, some of the attributes a supervisor needs to effectively delegate, some systems that allow supervisors to delegate without frustration, and techniques to improve your delegation skills.

The first portion of the session will present aspects of the problem and some theoretical background.  The second portion will use discussion and small group exercise to apply this knowledge to specific examples.  Finally, participants will develop a plan to sustain the strengths of their delegation process and further improve their ability.
