Basics for Supervisors

Description of Course

The Basics for CSB/SJU Supervisors session is designed to give participants an overview of the basics of supervising at CSB/SJU.  Through an interactive discussion, participants will gain a better understanding of student employment expectations for students and supervisors and the student employment timeline.

Conflict Management

Description of Course

This course will use discussion and role play to learn about:

  1. Acceptance of conflict as a natural and pervasive element in all relationships.
  2. Awareness of different forms of conflict.
  3. Managing conflict from a leadership position­.
  4. Managing conflict in personal life.

Creating Successful Relationships with Your Peers

Description of Course:

Interpersonal communication is often one of the most challenging aspects of any job or workplace. To communicate successfully we need to find a balanced approach to dealing with difficult people or conversations.  Most of us have heard about “I” statements and we know about passive, aggressive, and assertive communication—therefore, let’s move from those topics to the fascinating world of workplace personalities.  Do you understand the people you work with?  In this one hour course, participants will learn about workplace personalities and tips on how to effectively communicate with different workplace personalities.

Effective Feedback Without Fear

This course will help you develop your unique life plan.  Where do you want to be in one, five and ten years, and what do you need to do to accomplish those goals?  Discussion will center around sharing those plans and goals with others.

Description of Course

Challenge your potential to become an authentic leader with the "Five Principles of Exemplary Leadership" by Kouzes and Posner and the supporting Benedictine Values.  These principles and values will provide you with a framework in which to ground the process toward developing a personal leadership model.

Bring lunch and come talk about supervising students at CSB/SJU.  This series of discussions will be an opportunity for attendees to share ideas and ask questions about supervising student employees.  Each session will have a different focus; examples include hiring, orientation, and boundaries.

Supervising a Diverse Workspace

Location & Time:

  • Tuesday, December 1 from 8:15-9:30 a.m. in Gorecki 204B, CSB 

Description of Course

Background on the increasing presence of intercultural students on the CSB/SJU campus will be presented.   A discussion about the goals and approaches to retaining these students on campus will include small group discussions.   Finally, the group will develop a list of skills required to supervise a diverse workspace.
