Magic the Gathering Constitution

Article I: Name and Purpose

Section 1: Name

MTG Club (abbreviation of Magic: the Gathering Club)

Section 2: Purpose/Mission

To create a club where SJU and CSB students who enjoy playing magic cards can get together to compete, trade magic cards and exchange information.

Article II: Membership

Section 1: Eligibility for Membership

The MTG Club is open to any CSB/SJU student. Faculty and staff are not allowed to be full members, but they can be non-voting, affiliate members and participate in event.

Section 2: Voting Member Criteria

To become a voting member of the MTG Club you must attend the majority of meetings and participate in event.

Section 3: Removal of Members

If a member needs to be removed they will be given a notice (either electronic or written) to inform them of being considered for removal, opportunity to defend their position, a trial with voting by other members.

Article III: Officers

Section 1: Officer Qualifications

All officers must be current CSB/SJU student, active members of the club, and maintaining their academic grades.

  • Officers(any number depending on games/projects)
  • Secretary(l)
  • Treasurer(l)

Department of Student Activities contact persons are the president and the vice-president.

The Co-Funding Board (CFB) and Joint Club Board (JCB) contacts are the president and the vice-president.

Section 3: Duties of Officers

President (1): preside at meetings, call special meetings, primary contact with the institutions, appoint committee chairs, runs the election process, primary contact with the JCB, schedule meeting/practice rooms/facilities, plans member/officer training programs, notify members of meetings.

Vice-President (1): assume President’s duties in his/her absence and assist the president with the activities mentioned above.

Secretary: takes and distributes minutes of all club meetings, recorder keeper (current and past members, files minutes, etc), club historian, handles the official correspondences of the club.

Treasurer: keeps all financial records, submits monthly audit statements to CFB contact, notifies organization of financial issues, prepares budget/allocation requests,

Section 4: Vacancy in Office

In the event a vacancy should occur (resignation, graduation, or removal, etc.), then a special election will occur to replace the open position.

Section 5: Removal of Officers

If club members feel an officer must be removed the following steps must be taken.

A petition to remove the officer in question must be submitted to another officer. This petition must contain the signatures of 3 of voting members. When such petition is received, the officer shall call a meeting of the club to determine whether or not the officer should be removed.

Grounds for removal are to be presented by the officer in charge at a regular or special club meeting.

The officer in question shall be provided an opportunity to present a defense either in person or in writing.

A quorum shall be present, and a 2/3 vote of the voting members shall decide upon removal.

Section 6: Appeal of Removal of Officers

If a removed officer wants to appeal the removal, he or she can call a second vote at the next scheduled meeting or ask an officer to have a special meeting.

Article IV: Elections

Section 1: Nomination Process

If a member seeks an officer position an election will be held each semester. They can campaign for the position desired and will be voted on by other members of the club.

Section 2: Election

The election process will be held by April 1st, with more than 2/3 of the voting members present. Voting will be done by secret ballot. A person can run as many terms as desired.

Section 3: Special Elections

If an officer resigns or is removed the position a special election will take place. The same process as regular election will be held.

Article V: Advisor

Section 1: Selection

Any staff/faculty member of SJU or CSB willing to advise is allowed.

Section 2: Duties

See advisor contract.

Article VI: Meetings

Section 1: Regular Meeting/Club Activities

Meetings will occur when officers deem it necessary, at least once a month.

Section 2: Special Meetings

Special meetings will occur when officers deem it necessary.

Section 3: Parliamentary Authority


Section 4: Quorum

2/3 of the club must be present at meetings or elections for any significant changes or votes to occur.

Article VII: Committees

Section 1: Committee Structure

Members are allowed to have committees and a special meeting will be held to organize it.

Section 2: Special/Ad-Hoc Committees

Special/Ad-hoc committees are allowed if necessary.

Article VIII: Finances

Section 1: Co-Funding Board

The MTG Club will apply for CFB monies and if allocated resources, it will follow all CFB and institutional regulations and will not have an off-campus account.

Section 2: Honorariums

No one will receive honorariums.

Section 3: Dues (optional)

Dues are not required.

Article IX: Amendments

Section 1: Ratification

Proposed constitutional amendments will followed the same procedures of elections.

Section 2: Submittal to Department of Student Activities and Joint Club Board

Any changes made to this constitution will be submitted to the Department of Student Activities and the JCB.

Article X: Discrimination

The MTG Club admits students without regard to their race, religion, color, sex, age, sexual orientation or national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and other activities, generally accorded or made available to members of the organization.

Article XI: Hazing

The MTG Club considers hazing to be a degrading and destructive activity which is inconsistent with the standards of this student organization. The MTG Club recognizes the dignity of every person and opposes all forms of hazing.
