Alex Kuno: The Miscreants of Tiny Town Gallery Exhibition

Alex Kuno created a series of interwoven, darkly satirical fairy tale vignettes in his work The Miscreants of Tiny Town. This series presents the trials and tribulations of wayward children in various forms through mixed media paintings on hand carved pieces of wood, drawings on paper, sculpture and installation. These pieces are playful investigations of longings, fears and dark stories from childhood that have shaped our adult anxieties and understanding of the real-world, large-scale cultural, economic and environmental change.

For more information on this event and to read a statement from artist Alex Kuno, click here. This event is free of charge and does not require pre-registration.

Looking for a challenge this Family Weekend that is both fun and good for your health? Come over to the Saint John's Rock Climbing Wall at the Palaestra for free rock climbing with your family! Politics and a Pint

Looking for an interesting, informative, and inspiring event this Family Weekend? Join The Eugene J. McCarthy Center for Public Policy and Civic Engagement for Politics and a Pint, a discussion series focused on issues of public policy and politics. The speakers this year are Sam and Sylvia Kaplan. Sam and Sylvia Kaplan returned to Minnesota in May of 2013 after three and one-half years in Morocco, Sam as Ambassador, appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009, and Sylvia, as his partner in all things.

Sam, a St. Paul native, is a businessman and attorney and is the president of the law firm of Kaplan, Strangis and Kaplan. In addition to his business and professional responsibilities, he is a well-known and respected community leader and political activist. He and Sylvia were early supporters of Paul Wellstone, Keith Ellison, and RT Rybak, among other candidates that were considered long shots by the political pundits. Sam has been credited with providing the necessary credibility to such candidates by chairing finance committees that were successful in raising the necessary funds for his candidates to succeed. He found all of these experiences to be crucial to his success as United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco.

Sylvia has had multiple careers and interests, including having been a newspaper reporter, a university instructor, a clinical social worker, and a restaurant owner. Most of all, she has been a strong advocate for economic and social justice, believing the greatest contributions for those causes can be made through the political system.

Sylvia and Sam collaborate completely in the fundraisers they give for political candidates and civic causes and she believes such events must always be structured around good food and drink. In Morocco, Sylvia was fully in charge of the entertaining required at the ambassador's residence, and such occasions were regarded as very special by the diplomatic community.

Attention-Starved ChildrenLooking for a hilarious start to your Family Weekend? Look no further than CSB/SJU's own Attention-Starved Children, an improv comedy troupe that is sure to make you double-over with laughter. Attention-Starved Children will be taking the Stephen B. Humphrey stage at 8 PM and will be followed by main act, magician Jared Sherlock. This is a free event and no registration is required.

Please join CSB President Mary Hinton and SJU President Michael Hemesath as they share an outline of the CSBSJU Strategic Plan 2020.  Much about the world around us has changed since we adopted the last strategic plan, Strategic Directions 2015. Today, nearly all colleges and universities must address complex and disruptive demographic, economic, and cultural forces that have converged and crystallized in recent years. While these forces historically have influenced higher education, the pace of change and their impact has accelerated, reshaping the landscape for college and universities everywhere. Students and families expectations for an extraordinary learning experience will continue to be high, at the same time their concerns about cost may be growing. We and learn how we are prepared to meet those challenges.
