Psychology 111 Experiential Learning Activity Requirement (ELAR)

To supplement your laboratory experience, all psychology 111 students are required to take part in two psychology-related activities.  These activities can include participating in designated psychology experiments, attending designated psychology-related talks, or attending approved psychology club events.  Only experiments, talks, and events posted on the Experiential Learning Activity Requirement web site will count toward the Experiential Learning Activity Requirement.

The Psychology Department is using an experiment management system to record your Experiential Learning Activities.  This system will record all ELAR activities.  To access your ELAR account:

  • Click on the research participation link (above).
  • Enter your username (your e-mail address) and your password (your last name).
  • Read the privacy statement.
  • Click on “My Profile” to change your password and see your identity code.

Important information regarding sign-ups

  • To check the studies you are currently signed up for, click on “My Schedule and Credits.”  This will provide you with the study name, time, location, and credit status.
  • If you need to cancel your session, click on “My Schedule and Credits.”  Find the study you want to cancel and click on the cancel button.  You will be asked to verify your desire to cancel the study.  You may cancel a study sign-up up to 12 hours before the study is scheduled to occur.
  • Be sure to show up on time for your research project.  If you are more than 10 minutes late for a study, the researcher is not obligated to allow you to participate.
  • If you have problems accessing the site or signing up, please contact Dr. Pamela Bacon in the psychology department by calling her (x3919) or e-mailing her (pbacon@csbsju.edu).
Your rights as a research participant

We are committed to protecting your privacy and integrity as a research participant. All studies available on the ELAR web site have received approval by the CSB/SJU Institutional Review Board.  You have a right to an explanation of any study before you agree to participate in it.  In addition, everything that you say or do during a research project is strictly confidential.  If, during a study, you decide that you would rather not participate in a research project after all, then just ask for your credit slip and leave.  You cannot be penalized in any way for leaving a research session once it has begun.  If you have a complaint, concern or suggestion about the project you participated in, please feel free to call Dr. Pamela Bacon at x3919 or e-mail her at pbacon@csbsju.edu.  Your comments will be kept strictly confidential.

After the research session

When the research session is over, you will receive an explanation of the research project.  Pay close attention and ask any questions you have - this is your chance to find out what the research was all about.  The researcher may ask you not to share certain parts of the research with others.  It is very important for the research project that you help them by not talking about their research.  If you do talk, you may be ruining someone's senior project.  The experimenter will update your ELAR account to reflect your participation in the experiment.

Psychology Talk or Psychology Club Event

To find out about approved psychology-related talks and psychology club events, go to the ELAR web site and click on “Approved Psychology-Related Talks and Psychology Club Events.” (above)

Read about upcoming events.

  • Attend the event.
  • Complete a write-up of the activity using the on-line form (located on the “Approved Psychology-Related Talks and Psychology Club Events” page) within one week of the event.
  • Check your student account on the experiment management system to see that your psychology talk/psychology club event write-up was approved.  Updates will take place within one week of the receipt of your on-line form.
  • You will only receive credit for attending approved talks and activities.  It is your responsibility to submit your write-ups within one week of the date of the talk or activity.
