Since her days of listening to Twins games with her father and sneaking into the high-school gymnasium after hours to play basketball, S. Lois Wedl has been an avid sports fan. “My interest for sports originated with playing with the neighborhood boys. The most common game we played was softball,” said Wedl. “At times, we didn't own a real bat so any piece of wooden stick would do.”
Her love of sports remained throughout the years, following her to Saint Benedict, where she joined the faculty in 1986 after attaining her Ph.D. from Ohio University in Athens. S. Lois attends as many Blazer games as possible. “One thing I love about sports is becoming part of the Blazer sports family which includes parents, siblings, friends, coaches, trainers and players.” In addition to being the Blazer’s number one fan, S. Lois also serves the Saint Benedict community as assistant professor of education, director of the Elderhostel program, residence director and member of the monastic community.
S. Lois also gets involved in Blazer sports by sending out scores to people around the country who want to know how various teams are doing. “Also, if I know someone has been injured or is experiencing some loss, I write to her and/or call her to see how she is doing,” said Wedl. She even sends cards to players who have earned special honors such as “Blazer of the Week.”
The Blazers love having Wedl as a fan, too. Each team often invites her to its closing banquet. She also builds life-long relationships with the athletes, and is frequently invited to attend special events in players’ lives, such as weddings.
Although Wedl enjoys watching the Saint John’s Johnnies and pro-sports teams such as the Wild, Timberwolves, Twins and Vikings, her heart remains with the Blazers. “I will always attend a Blazer game before any other game,” she said.
