“The Future of Policy and Partisanship” A panel discussion featuring former Senator Dave Durenberger; Bernard Evans, Associate Professor of Theology at CSB /SJU and the Virgil Michael Chair in Theology; Kathleen Twohy, Chair of the CSB/SJU Nursing Department; and Toby Pearson, 1988 St. John’s graduate and Executive Director of the Catholic Health Association of Minnesota. Health Policy Crisis and Solutions:  A lunch and lecture with Durenberger and Dr. Guy Clifton, a nationally known neurosurgeon, clinical investigator, administrator and health policy advocate who is now devoting himself to health policy reform.  Gorecki 204C, CSB, 11:45 a.m.

February 18       

“Green Design in the 21st Century: Lessons from the World” a lecture by Chris Butters, visiting professor from the University of Oslo (Norway). Butters is also an architect and consultant for GAIA (Global Awareness Interdisciplinary Alliance) International and has built sustainable communities and dwellings throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Taiwan, and Bhutan. The Power of Doorstep Democracy: Political Science Professor James Read, who ran a door-to-door campaign for the Minnesota legislature in 1992, will discuss this particular way of engaging voters in an era of widespread mass media. Brother Willie’s Pub, SJU, 4:30 p.m.

Politics & a Pint:  Free markets, globalization and the Plea for Social Justice. A discussion with Economics and Theology professor Dan Finn on how globalization and market liberalization have affected social justice worldwide. Brother Willie’s Pub, SJU, 4:30 pm

Day at the Capitol. Join other students from Minnesota’s private colleges for a day of interaction with your state representatives at the Capitol in St. Paul.  This day goes beyond the fifth grade field trip and allows you to meet face-to-face with the lawmakers who represent you in the Minnesota Senate and House of Representatives.  The day will include presentations by Senate and House leadership as well as CSB-SJU alums who work as lobbyists, legislative aids, lawmakers, and in other areas of state government.
