Tanya Brothen

Washington D.C. Summer Internship Program Summer 2002

Tanya interned at Search for Common Ground located at 1601 Connecticut Avenue, Suite 200, Washington, DC.

Search for Common Ground is a non-profit, non-governmental organization.  Its goal is to resolve conflict in various countries and regions around the world.  The offices in DC exist to support the field offices that are located near the conflict sites.  The DC offices raise money, conduct research, and generally get the word out about the Search's mission, all of which provide the assistance that the field offices need to function successfully.  Search conducts conflict resolution programs around the world and Tanya interned for their Sub-Saharan Africa Program.

Here is what Tanya had to say about her internship experience: "My internship was an amazing experience that affected me in many ways, both personally and intellectually.  One such affect occurred not long after I began working.  I learned very quickly that a nine-to-five office job is not something I ever wish to have. I grew extremely antsy sitting at my desk day after day, typing reports and conducting research. Luckily I have been able to gain something positive from this experience. It taught me more about what kinds of jobs and eventually what kind of career I want for my future.  I learned that I need a working environment that is more active, unpredictable and exciting. It is better to have learned this lesson during a two month employment than to become trapped in an undesirable job with a longer commitment in the future.

I gained so much personally and intellectually from not only the internship, but also the experience of living in a different city.  This opportunity changed me, in ways that are too numerous to discuss.  I am very grateful that I was able to participate in the Washington Summer Study Program.  I know that my time in DC will be a great benefit to me now and throughout my entire life."
