These are two questions that many students hear continually throughout their college career from a variety of people such as parents, family members, teachers/staff and other students. The accompanying sleepless nights and queasy stomachs are symptoms of stress that can leave everyone involved feeling overwhelmed and incapable of moving forward.
So, how can you as a parent/family member support your child in their quest to figure out what they want to do?
From a career counselor’s perspective, two steps that are essential in the career exploration and decision-making process involve GETTING INFORMATION and TESTING OUT OPTIONS.
Career Services has a variety of services and programs that can assist students throughout their four years. An example of one such program is the Career Exploration Series – weekly career panels held on a variety of topics such as "What Can I Do with a Psychology Major?" and "International Careers." These panels are designed to help ALL students - first years through seniors -"gather information" about various careers and career paths as well as "network" and "make connections."
Panel members include CSB and SJU alums and the one-hour format allows the alums to share information about their background and experiences and concludes with the opportunity for students to ask questions and talk informally with the panel. And, we serve refreshments! What more could students want??? Feel free to encourage your child to attend one of these or other panels to "jump start" their career exploration process!
