Red-bellied Snake

(Storeria occipitomaculata)

The Red-Bellied Snake extremely secretive and rarely spotted, with most specimens only seen when road-killed. This nocturnal species is relatively small, usually from 20-40 cm in length, and ranges in color from brown to gray to black. The belly, as its name implies, is red or orange while the chin is white. This snake lives in wooded areas, but is also found near wetlands and in grasslands.
