Thomas Brossart

Thomas is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Guatemala
Major: Hispanic Studies

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I wanted to study abroad in Guatemala because international education is a vital part of understanding our globally connected society. The United States has a massive impact in Latin America, and I want to learn how that impact can be more positive.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

Learning a high level of Spanish has changed how I think about all forms of human communication. Also, fresh mangos are delicious!

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

It was the single most life changing four months of my life. The Guatemala trip has dramatically shifted what I plan to do with my career; I now plan to return to work in Latin America.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Some of the benefits are starting to become bilingual, a more confident public speaker, having more empathy for Latin America, and a greater understanding of the complicated role the United States has played in Latin America.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

Do it! Embrace the change, be prepared to confront your privilege and stay open to massive personal, professional growth.
