Sarah is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Japan
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I chose to study abroad, because not only do I enjoy traveling, I also wanted to learn and live within a different culture. During college is also a good time to study abroad, because after graduation there won't be as many opportunities to do so. I decided to study abroad in Japan, because I have always been interested about the Japanese lifestyle and culture. I was also a big fan of anime and manga.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
In Japan, the subway system is a huge aspect of transportation there. When I first arrived in Japan, I did not know how read a map properly and was always nervous to travel alone. But with so many excursions involving the subway system and also squeezing onto the subway, I was able to read a map properly. This allowed me to be more aware and made me more confident in the subway system. A few times I even traveled by myself.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
This experience was wonderful. Even though I did not speak any Japanese before studying abroad, I was able to pick up several of the basic phrases and utilized them in my daily routine. I also experienced many cultural things, such as: onsens, wearing a kimono, participating in the festival, and much more. Since I studied at Bunkyo Gakuin University, which is located in Tokyo, I was able to explore many nearby cities. We also visited Hiroshima, Kyoto, and Nara. This experience has allowed me to be more aware of the world around me and I hope I'll be given the opportunity to study abroad somewhere else soon.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
I believe that studying abroad allows you to become more aware of the world and learn to appreciate another culture and their traditions. I have also become more independent, since I had to learn to budget my expenses and a few times I traveled alone.
What advice can you offer for CSB|SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
I would like CSBSJU students to not let the opportunity of studying abroad pass them, because it truly is an experience of a lifetime. I also want students to learn how to budget, but also to remember to enjoy their time abroad as well. I also believe that students should understand that every country may be different than the United States, so they should be open minded when they study abroad.
