Kelly is an Ambassador who studied abroad in India
Major: Political Science and Peace Studies
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I chose to study abroad because I wanted to expand my perspective and experience a culture completely unlike my own. India stuck out to me because I knew I would be in for an other-worldly adventure.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
The first time I got to visit an Indian market with my host father made a lastly impression on me. There is always so much going on in these markets that the sights, sounds, and smells are truly all-encompassing and over-whelming. This experience was the first time it hit me that I was on the other side of the world.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
My overall experience was very broadening. Living in India challenged my every value and helped me have a greater understanding of the world.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
Studying abroad enabled me to appreciate and learn from people of different backgrounds that did not necessarily think and act the same way as I do. While this was extremely challenging, I can now say I have a greater acceptance of diversity and culture.
What advice can you offer for CSB|SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Go for the moon! The concept of studying in a foreign country for an extended period of time is extremely nerve-racking, but that is what makes it exciting!
