Ben is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Galway
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
Study abroad gave me unique opportunity to attain a global perspective. Immersing myself in the Irish culture was eye-opening and thought-provoking. My family has deep Irish roots, so I wanted to learn more about the land my ancestors came from. Also, the excursions across Ireland interested me.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
We attended a local, professional rugby match of Connacht Rugby. I am a sports enthusiast, but I am not all that familiar with rugby. We were given free flags at the gate and I was immediately caught up in the excitement of the sport. For that rainy evening, I felt truly Irish.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
My study experience was unforgettable. I will always look back fondly at the informative classes, cozy cottages, and terrific weekend excursions. We had the chance to travel to Dublin, Cork, Belfast, Derry, and pretty much every other natural wonder or locale in Ireland. The friendships I fostered and the memories I made will be life long. Also, my abroad experience transformed me into an international traveler.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
After returning from abroad, I am a more confident individual. I am more independent and impetuous. I am ready to travel at a moment's notice. I also have been able to take the information I learned about Irish History, Literature, and Theology and transfer it into meaningful examples in my classes at CSB/SJU.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
The best advice I can give is overcome awkwardness. It may seem awkward to chat up a local street vendor or a student, but the friendships you can make are worth it. It is terrificly important to be open-minded.
