Program Description

The United Arab Emirates is one of the most vital centers in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region, with respect to religion, history, culture, politics, and international trade. Some of the objectives of this study abroad course are for students to learn about the religions, history, culture, and politics of the Middle East through discussions, lectures, academic guided tours, and a variety of interactive contacts with the people of the United Arab Emirates.

During the program, students will enroll in a 2-credit course COLG 280: The Religions, Histories, and Cultures of the Middle East and the United Arab Emirates.  This course has been approved to fulfill the Intercultural (IC) component of the Common Curriculum.

Program Cost

The estimated Program Fee is $4,100 plus the cost of 2 CSB|SJU credits at the reduced summer tuition rate (approximately $525 per credit).

This price includes:

  • Round trip airfare from MSP
  • Guided tours and entrance to museums, galleries, and historic sites
  • Housing

The Program Fee does not include:

  • Most meals
  • Personal Spending Money
  • Some Local Transportation

Housing

Students will reside in single-sex residence halls at the American University of Sharjah or in rooms at a hotel near the campus. In any case, students will share a room with another student of the same gender.

Director

Dr. Jon Armajani, Associate Professor in the undergraduate Department of Theology at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, earned a Bachelor of Arts, Phi Beta Kappa, with a major in Philosophy and minor in German from Oberlin College, a Master of Divinity in Christian Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D in Religious Studies with a focus on Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies from the Univeristy of California Santa Barbara. He has spent significant amounts of time conducting research and other projects in various countries in the Middle East, and among other languages, has a command of Arabic and Persian (also called Farsi). He has published three books related to Islam, the Middle East, and other regions. Jon teaches courses related to Islam, the Middle East, Christianity, and other world religions at CSB|SJU. Associate Director

Dr. Kathryn Enke is Chief of Staff in the College of Saint Benedict President's Office. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Saint Benedict, majoring in history and minoring in mathematics, as well as a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. in educational policy and administration from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, with a specialization in higher education administration. Her scholarship focuses on the ways that an individual's identities (gender, race, sexuality, religion, etc.) mediate her or his experiences in higher education.
