NRSG 206 Course Offerings - Cultural Selectives for Spring 2010

All cultural selective courses are focused around the following objectives/requirements with some individual specialization:

Provides students with the opportunity to study or explore a variety of nursing topics at the lower- and upper-division levels.  A minimum of three selectives is required; only one may be taken at the 100-level.  Courses are designed to allow students to choose selectives based on their personal interest.  All courses contain a cultural component.  Prerequisite for 200 & 300 level: admission to the nursing major. Specific section topics may have additional pre-requisites. 

 

SPRING 2010

NRSG 206B-01A Health Issues in the Developing World

This course is designed to expand the student's understanding of the cultural aspects in providing professional nursing care to women living in the developing and under-serviced regions of the world. Emphasis is placed on attitudes and expectations for women from select cultures, cultural implications affecting health care, health issues and conditions affecting morbidity and mortality for women of select cultures, and differences in approach and assessment when providing health care for women in select ethnic groups.  Students will have an opportunity to do further research and learn in depth about how history and cultural, political, and social climate, and gender of selected ethnic group influence and predict the predominant health issues and practices.

 

NRSG 206H-01A: Women’s Health Across Cultures

This course is designed to expand the student’s understanding of the cultural aspects in providing professional nursing care for immigrant and minority women. Emphasis is placed on attitudes and expectations for women from select cultures, cultural implications affecting health care, health issues and conditions affecting morbidity and mortality for women of select cultures, and differences in approach and assessment when providing health care for women in select ethnic groups.

 

NRSG 206L-01A: Adolescent Health Risk Behaviors Across Cultures

This course is designed to expand the students' understanding of the importance of cultural aspects of health necessary for professional nursing practice. The course will focus on the health risk behaviors of adolescents across a variety of cultures. Students will begin by understanding their own cultural group's health risk behaviors. They will then focus on the health risk behaviors of adolescents from a specific cultural background of their choice.

 

NRSG 206M-01A: World Religions, Culture and Health Care

This course explores the world’s religions and how these influence health care beliefs and practices. The course is designed to expand the students' understanding of the importance of religious beliefs across a broad range of cultural groups and the impact on health decision-making. Students will propose effective patient interactions that integrate health beliefs/practices, religion, culture, and professional nursing practice.

 

NRSG 206N-01A: End-of-Life Care Across Cultures

This course is designed to expand the students' understanding of how cultural beliefs impact end-of-life decision-making.  Students will explore a broad range of cultural beliefs and practices around death and dying across the lifespan and discuss how this information can be applied to professional nursing practice. 

 

NRSG 206P-01A-General Cultural Selective Topics

Students will explore the health care practices and beliefs of a select cultural group. Students will discover the impact of the past and present political and social environment, gender, and genetic influences on that group’s culture. Using this information, students will then explore the health care delivery systems of that group and consider the role of culture on health, illness, treatment and recovery.
