NRSG 206 Course Offerings - Cultural Selectives for Fall 2009

All cultural selective courses are focused around the following objectives/requirements with some individual specialization:

Provides students with the opportunity to study or explore a variety of nursing topics at the lower- and upper-division levels.  A minimum of three selectives is required; only one may be taken at the 100-level.  Courses are designed to allow students to choose selectives based on their personal interest.  All courses contain a cultural component.  Prerequisite for 200 & 300 level: admission to the nursing major. Specific section topics may have additional pre-requisites. 

FALL 2009

NRSG 206D-01A: Integrating Complimentary Therapies into Nursing Practice

Online Course       Mary Neisen

This course offers learners an opportunity to explore selected alternative and complementary therapies. This cultural selective is designed to introduce students to a variety of alternative and complementary therapies. A variety of therapies from herbalism and acupuncture to massage therapy and therapeutic touch will be explored. The focus of this selective is on the exploration of these therapies.

NRSG 206G-01A: SA Study Abroad Preparation 
Only for students abroad in South Africa in Spring 2010

Various Mondays 8:15am-9:45am       BLDG: Main 425      Denise Meijer

In this course, students will explore the health care beliefs and practices of the people of South Africa.  Emphasis is placed on how the historical background, cultural attitudes and expectations, political, social, gender and genetics of the South Africans influence health care. Select health issues and health conditions of South Africans will be addressed.

 

NRSG 206I-01A: Native American Health Issues     

Mod CD  Wednesdays   8:15am-9:45am    BLDG: Main 425        Carrie Hoover

Students will explore the health care practices and beliefs of the Native American. Using this information, students will develop an understanding of why health care delivery systems and personnel must consider the impact of factors of culture on health prevention, treatment and recovery. Students will also learn how the historical background, cultural, political, social, gender and genetics of the Native American influence and predicts the predominant health issues and practices.

 

NRSG 206J-01A: Introduction to the Border Culture  

Mod B-135   1:00pm-2:10pm       BLDG: Main 425        Rachelle Parsons

This course offers learners an opportunity to explore issues related to immigration and health on the Mexico/Texas border.  This cultural selective is designed to introduce students to a variety of border factors including economic, cultural, health and political issues.  Students will relate these issues to care of Hispanic clients in Minnesota.  This course is required for students intending to register for the May term El Paso/Juarez experience.
