Lab and Computer Facilities

There are three types of laboratories available in the nursing department: a nursing skills lab, a critical care lab, and a computer skills lab.

Nursing Skills Lab

The nursing skills laboratory contains six patient-bed units supplied with a bedside stand, and overbed table. The lab is stocked with equipment for teaching and evaluation of psychomotor nursing skills such as medication administration, crutch walking, maintaining orthopedic traction, suctioning, administration of IV fluids, and maintenance of drainage tubes. Students purchase Laboratory kits in the Bookstore that contain their personal laboratory practice supplies.  Open Lab hours, under the supervision of lab assistants, are posted each semester; some evening and weekend hours are included.  Students videotape their performance of selected psychomotor skills and submit these tapes for faculty evaluation and/or grading.

Critical Care Lab

The critical care lab is a single-patient room equipped for the care and monitoring of a critically ill client. Students learn and practice skills such as cardiac monitoring and blood administration.

Computer Skills Lab

The computer lab is equipped with six networked computer terminals for computer-assisted learning and computer simulations. Students have a number of computer assignments designed for drill and practice, simulated learning, and testing of knowledge. The computer lab also houses a computer on wheels (COW). The mobility of this unit provides classroom access to the campus network and the Internet. Lab hours are generally 8-4:30 or when the Nursing Skills lab is staffed.  Students frequently make class presentations that require knowledge of presentation software (PowerPoint) and/or Internet search skills.  Students are advised to become familiar with the entire Microsoft Office Suite during their time at CSB/SJU.  The training schedule is posted at Information Technology Web site.
