Local health facilities used by CSB/SJU nursing students for on-site clinical experiences include:
As an academic major in a practice discipline, nursing students have opportunities to apply principles and concepts from the liberal arts and nursing science to the provision of nursing care for individuals, families and communities. These learning opportunities occur in a variety of settings in the Central Minnesota community.
A hallmark of baccalaureate nursing practice is an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. Health promotion learning activities are the focus of clinical experiences in Head Start centers, elementary, secondary and post secondary schools, county Correctional facilities, home appointments through Stearns and Benton County public health nursing agencies and occupational settings.
Clinical experiences for clients experiencing acute health problems occur primarily in two local agencies, the St. Cloud Hospital, a level II facility in St. Cloud, MN and the St. Cloud Surgical Center, a same-day surgery facility. The St. Cloud Hospital received Magnet Status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in spring of 2004. Magnet status is a reflection of high-quality nursing care; only one other acute care facility in MN, Mayo, presently has this status, though a number of hospitals are in the application process. Students participate in care delivery on medical, surgical, critical care, pediatric, maternity and mental health units.
Clinical experiences for client's experiencing chronic health problems occur in a wide variety of community agency placements such as Hope Community Center, a day-facility for the chronically mentally ill, numerous long term care facilities (LTC) for the elderly.
Nursing leadership clinical experiences are provided throughout Central Minnesota in hospitals, LTC facilities, occupational settings, schools, home care, and public health agencies. Each student is assigned to one clinical site for the duration of the clinical experience but opportunities are available for students to share their learning experiences across sites.
