Zhou Shibin to Speak at SJU

Collegeville, Minn. - Zhou Shibin, associate professor of music at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in China, will present a lecture on Friday, May 2, at 8 p.m. in the choral rehearsal room of the Stephen B. Humphrey Theater at Saint John's University.
The title of his lecture is "Aspects of Chinese Traditional
Music."
Zhou, currently a visiting professor at the University of Miami
School of Music, will use slides, recordings and video tapes to give a description of the various forces that have shaped Chinese music. Zhou will also explain why Chinese music has become so important to the national culture in China. Included in the lecture will be instrumental and vocal music, along with folk music, dance and Chinese opera.
Zhou's acquaintance with Saint John's University and the College of Saint Benedict started in the late 1980s when he taught the course "Chinese National Music Culture" to students of the study abroad program from CSB/SJU at Southwest China Normal University.
