Daisy Hernandez to deliver keynote for Women's Month at CSB

Daisy Hernandez will deliver the keynote address for Women's Month at the College of Saint Benedict at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20 in room 204, Gorecki Center. 

Hernandez, who was raised in New Jersey, will discuss the intersectionality of race and gender. 

Hernandez received her bachelor of arts in English at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J., and her master's in journalism and Caribbean and Latin American studies at New York University in New York City. 

By age 25, Hernandez was a columnist for Ms. Magazine, where she wrote stories about feminism and her life as a Latina. She also spent a year at the New York Times' metro desk. 

Hernandez spent six years working at ColorLines, a newsmagazine focused on race and politics.

In 2007 ColorLines was awarded UTNE's General Excellence Award, and Hernandez's article "Becoming a Black Man" was nominated for a 2009 GLAAD Media Award. 

Throughout her writing career, Hernandez has had residencies at Hedgebrook (2000), MacDowell Colony (2001), Blue Mountain Center (2008) and the Djerassi Resident Arts Program (2009). She also worked as part of the Macondo writing workshop started by Sandra Cisneros in San Antonio, Texas. 

Her essays have been published in numerous anthologies, including "50 Ways to Support Lesbian and Gay Equality," "Without a Net: The Female Experience of Growing Up Working Class" and "Border-Line Personalities: A New Generation of Latinas Dish on Sex, Sass, and Cultural Shifting." Her commentaries have aired on NPR's "All Things Considered." 

In addition to her own writings, Hernandez worked alongside poet and author Bushra Rehman to co-edit the anthology "Colonize This! Young Women of Color on Today's Feminism."
