Spence and Chin Speak at SJU

Collegeville, Minn. - Jonathan Spence and Ann-Ping Chin, two leading Chinese historians/authors, will present lectures at Saint John's University on Tuesday, April 29. Ann Ping Chin will be speaking about "The Idea of Justice in Mencius and Hsun-Tze" at 4:15 p.m. in room 264 of the Quadrangle. Mencius and Hsun-Tze were Chinese philosophers. Jonathan Spence will present a lecture on "Justice and History in Contemporary China" at 7:30 p.m. in the Stephen B. Humphrey Theater.

Spence, a Sterling professor of history and director of the graduate studies council on East Asian studies at Yale University, has done extensive speaking and writing in the area of China's history and key personalities of China. Serving currently on the Governing Board of Yale University Press, Spence continues his perceptive and compelling studies with his latest publication, "God's Chinese Son."

In 1990, after four research and lecture trips to China, Spence wrote "The Search for Modern China," which records 400

years of Chinese history. This book is used by many universities as a major history textbook for undergraduate students.

Chin earned a doctorate in East Asian languages and cultures, particularly the philosophy and traditions of China, from Columbia University. Currently, Chin teaches both undergraduate and graduate level courses in the department of history at Yale University, specializing in the Chinese intellectual tradition, Chinese cultural history between 1500-1800, and the Confucian tradition.
