An outdoor festival celebrating the national championship won by the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in the Outdoor Nation Campus Challenge will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at the CSB mall. The event is free and open to the public.
Come to the festival ready to play outside and celebrate the beautiful outdoors and outdoor people we have in Minnesota. Activities will include snowshoe, ski or sledding relays; life-size board games and lawn games in the snow; a bonfire, hot cocoa and hot pancakes with Saint John’s Maple Syrup; and, if the weather allows, horse-drawn sleigh rides through the Saint Benedict Monastery woods.
CSB and SJU were crowned national champions after eight weeks of competition with nine other colleges and universities across the country. Outdoor Nation and The North Face selected the schools that competed head-to-head between Sept. 27 and Nov. 22 to see which could get the most people in their student bodies and surrounding communities outside and active.
Although CSB and SJU was the second smallest school selected when the combined enrollments are added together, our community of students, faculty, staff, alumnae/i and friends dominated the competition early-on and CSB/SJU won with nearly 40 percent of the total points. SJU sophomore Pearce Jensen was one of five people named “Outsider of the Year” after he completed the maximum number of outdoor activities possible during the contest.
CSB and SJU won a $10,000 gear library which includes tents, sleeping bags, backpacks and more that will be available for check-out from the Outdoor Leadership Center on the SJU campus, and funding for the community celebration on Feb. 15.
