Al Eisele ’58 returns to Saint John’s as a scholar-in-residence

Saint John’s University welcomes Al Eisele ’58 for a week-long residency March 10-14, 2008, as part of the Eugene J. McCarthy Scholar-in-Residence program.  Along with classroom visits and community lectures, Mr. Eisele is also participating in a panel discussion about politics and the changing nature of journalism at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 13, in Quad 264.  This event is open to the public. He will be joined by Minneapolis Star Tribune Columnist Nick Coleman.

In addition to being the editor of The Hill, one of Washington D.C.’s top political newspapers, Eisele was also a distinguished visiting professor at the University of Oklahoma’s Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication.  He was a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars and Fellows of the Institute and is the former press secretary to Vice President Walter Mondale.

The Eugene J. McCarthy Scholar-in-Residence program is sponsored by The Eugene J. McCarthy Center for Public Policy & Civic Engagement at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.

Rare, limited reproduction of The Saint John's Bible presented to His Holiness on April 4

On April 4, the St. Peter Apostles Edition of The Saint John’s Bible will be presented to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI by the Papal Foundation. The presentation will take place in Rome at the annual meeting of the Papal Foundation. The Holy Father will be presented the first Apostles Edition, the most rare, full-sized reproduction of the Bible. Only 12 sets will be created.  The presentation will include a handwritten dedication page by Donald Jackson, the artistic director of The Saint John’s Bible, in honor of the Holy Father.

The delegation making the presentation includes representatives of the Papal Foundation along with representatives of the Saint John’s community including Abbot John Klassen, OSB, Br. Dietrich Reinhart, OSB, Fr. Columba Stewart, OSB, and Jackson, and his wife, Mabel. The Holy Father will receive the Wisdom Books, and subsequent volumes will be delivered over the next four years.
