CSB/SJU Students Present Work at Notre Dame Student Peace Conference

Four students from the College of Saint Benedict, St. Joseph, and Saint John’s University, Collegeville, presented their work at the 2006 University of Notre Dame Student Peace Conference March 31-April 1 at the Hesburgh Center for International Studies, South Bend, Ind.

SJU seniors Matt Arnold and Sam Boggs, CSB junior Carliene Quist and SJU junior Mike Beckstrand took part in the conference, whose theme was, “Voices of Today, Changes for Tomorrow.” The conference highlighted student activism, youth leadership, the role of youth in peace building, the consequences of war and conflict on youth and society.

Each of the students took part in a panel presentation. Each had 15 minutes to present their abstract. Following the presentations was a period of comments and questions.

Boggs and Quist took part in a panel, “Art in War and Peacebuilding.” Boggs, a peace studies major from Moorhead, Minn., presented his paper, “From the Front: Cries for Peace in First World War German Expressionist Poetry.” Quist, a peace studies and Spanish major from St. Cloud, Minn., presented her paper, “Slam! Spoken Word Poetry: Cross-Cultural Dialogue Out Loud.”

Arnold took part in a panel, “Human Rights and Security in the Context of Immigration” and presented his paper, “Post 9/11 Mexican Immigration in the United States: Migration in the New Contexts of Globalization and Terror.” He is a peace studies and Spanish major from Waite Park, Minn.

Beckstrand took part in a panel, “Creating Institutions for Peace.” He presented his paper, “Progression Toward Perpetual Peace: Eastern Europe and the European Union.” The peace studies and political science major is from Elk River, Minn.       

The annual conference is sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, and is planned and directed entirely by undergraduate peace studies students. Among the keynote speakers were Chinese filmmakers Jian Yi and Wu Wenguang.
