Asian New Year Celebration Returns to CSB/SJU

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University Asia Club is hosting the 2002 Asian New Year celebration from 4:30-8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 in the Saint John's University Sexton Arena. This annual event celebrates the Asian countries represented on the CSB/SJU campus and their New Year celebrations. This year's masters of ceremony are Marc Brodie, CSB/SJU professor of mathematics and Theresa McNutt, CSB/SJU multicultural student program director. In this year's celebration, the different cultures represented are Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Hmong, Japanese, Indonesian and Korean. There will be booths set up around Sexton arena representing the different cultures, an Asian meal and variety of performances.

The evening's entertainment will include Hmong singing, Vietnamese and Japanese dancing and martial arts demonstrations, including Karate, Aikido and Tae kwon do.

The visiting students and staff from Zhanjiang Normal College (ZNC) in China will also participate in the celebration by singing and modeling their traditional clothing.

Saint John's University for men and the College of Saint Benedict for women are partners in liberal arts education, providing students the opportunity to benefit from the distinctions of not one, but two nationally recognized Catholic, undergraduate colleges. Together, the colleges challenge students to live balanced lives of learning, work, leadership and service in a changing world.
