Fine Arts Programming at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University will present Impressions, an exhibit of watercolors by artist Calvin deRuyter, and Into Nature, an exhibit of photos by nature photographer Nancy Ehlen.
The exhibits open June 4 and will be on display through July 27 in the Gorecki Gallery and Gallery Lounge of the Benedicta Arts Center of the College of Saint Benedict.
The public is invited to join the artists for a reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday, June 29, in the Benedicta Arts Center galleries.
deRuyter is “an artist first, a painter second, who happens to use watercolor” as his medium of choice. deRuyter’s work is a departure from more traditional watercolor techniques as he creates impressionistic images with little white left on the paper, utilizing harder bristol brushes. His work embodies the exploration and expression of mood and feeling through the use of light and color. deRuyter has exhibited his work in numerous regional venues and has participated in several juried exhibits, receiving the 2006 Awards of Merit from both the Northstar Watercolor Society and Extremely Minnesota Robbin Gallery.
Extensive travel throughout Minnesota and Arizona has provided Ehlen with the opportunity to experience “nature at its finest.” In her work, Ehlen attempts to “discover the beauty and solitude of each special place” and reproduce those elements in her photographs.
The Gorecki Gallery and Gallery Lounge are located in the Benedicta Arts Center on the College of Saint Benedict campus. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call the box office at 320-363-5777 or visit the Fine Arts Web site.
The 2006-2007 Visual Arts Series is sponsored by St. Cloud Sprint with additional funding from Target Corporation, Minnesota State Arts Board and the National Endowment for the Arts.
