Poet Anne Carson returns to the College of Saint Benedict to give a unique lecture at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20 at the Instrumental Rehearsal Room, Benedicta Arts Center of the College of Saint Benedict, St. Joseph.
Carson will give a lecture in the form of 15 sonnets. During her lecture, a video of dancers will run behind Carson.
Her lecture, which is sponsored by the Literary Arts Institute at CSB, is free and open to the public.
Carson conducted a reading of her works in 2001 at CSB. Her books of poetry include “The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos” (2001), winner of the T.S. Elliot Prize for Poetry; “Economy of the Unlost” (1999); “Autobiography of Red” (1998), shortlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the T.S. Elliot prize; “Plainwater: Essays and Poetry” (1996); “Glass, Irony and God” (1995), shortlisted for the Forward Prize; and “Goddesses and Wise Women” (1992).
She is also a classicist who has translated “If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho” (2002), and the author of “Eros the Bittersweet” (1998).
Her book, “The Mirror of Simple Souls” (2003), was the inaugural production of One Crow Press at the Literary Arts Institute.
“Anne Carson is, for me, the most exciting poet writing today,” said poet and novelist Michael Ondaatje of Carson.
Carson’s appearance comes during National Poetry Month, and comes just four days before U.S. poet laureate Donald Hall speaks April 24 at CSB.
