Fine Arts Programming at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University presents the Luna Negra Dance Theater at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, in Petters Auditorium, Benedicta Arts Center of the College of Saint Benedict.
Luna Negra Dance Theater is an amazing blend of contrasts - serious and funny, classic and modern, adventurous and subtle.
Devoted to the creation and presentation of contemporary dance of Latino choreographers, it deliberately steers away from stereotypes or folkloric representations. Instead, it celebrates Latino artistic and musical traditions and explores new directions and identities.
Dancer, choreographer and educator Eduardo Vilaro founded Luna Negra Dance Theater in 1999 in Chicago. Since then, the company has achieved wide acclaim and international attention, including multiple performances at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, Ravinia Festival, Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, and tours of Panama and Mexico.
The distinctive style of the company blends ballet and modern dance techniques, strongly flavored by Latin and Afro-Caribbean dance forms. Vilaro is interested in the creation of new, highly original Latino works of art, contemporary in both style and content.
Tickets to Luna Negra Dance Theater are $22, Senior (60+)/Youth (5-21) $18, CSB/SJU ID $11. For tickets call the Benedicta Arts Center at 320-363-5777 or order online at the Fine Arts Web site, though discounts are not available online. Visit Luna Negra Dance Theater online.
