The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University student newspaper, The Record, won 10 awards, including first place for general excellence for the second consecutive year, from the Minnesota Newspaper Association’s 2004-05 College Better Newspaper Contest January 27 at the Sheraton Hotel South in Bloomington, Minn.
The Record also took first place in categories of typography and design and the editorial page as a whole. The contest was judged by newspaper professionals from Wisconsin.
There were also seven individual awards given out to Record reporters.
Matt Smith won first place in general reporting for his story “A voice silenced.” Brad Arendt placed first both in feature writing for his work “Recycling the soul,” and in photo story photography for his piece “Fire & Art.”
Peter Polga-Hecimovich won a second-place award for his column writing, Kelly Smith won second place in best social issues for her feature story "Homeless in St. Cloud,” Arendt took second in sports action/feature photography for "Rugby wound," and Marie Alton took second place in sports reporting for "Assisting those beyond the field."
