The Teagle Foundation of New York City has awarded the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University a grant of $91,657. Led by project director Daniel McKanan, CSB/SJU associate professor of theology, the grant will fund an investigation into the topic of controversial conversations in the context of a faith-based, liberal arts college. CSB is the fiscal agent for the grant. The timeline for the grant is January 2006-June 2007.
The goal is to identify strategies to generate and legitimize conversations regarding controversial topics and ensure that these conversations are marked by both civility and courage. As many of the controversial issues discussed on campuses today are issues of sexuality and gender, these topics will be a focus. The research will be used by the CSB/SJU community and disseminated to other institutions to help understand how to best hold such conversations in light of CSB/SJU’s Catholic, Benedictine heritage and commitment to a liberal arts education.
The invitation only, national grant process was highly competitive. The CSB/SJU proposal was one of only five funded. The grant application was prepared by: McKanan; Patricia Cespedes-Schueller, CSB director of campus ministry; Sheila Nelson, CSB/SJU associate professor of sociology; Ozzie Mayers, CSB/SJU professor of English; Elisabeth Wengler, CSB/SJU assistant professor of history; Annette Atkins, CSB/SJU professor of history; and Catherine Stoch, CSB director of corporate and foundation relations.
The Teagle Foundation is committed to providing intellectual and financial leadership for the promotion and strengthening of liberal education. Please visit www.teaglefoundation.org for detailed descriptions of Teagle’s grants and for more information on the Foundation and its programs.
