About the Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Dale White since 1978, is the select concert band at CSB/SJU. The ensemble consists of around 40-50 members, who include music majors and minors, and talented instrumentalists from a variety of other majors. The group plays original and transcribed literature for winds, ranging from classics by Bach and Mozart, to standard wind works by Grainger and Holst, as well as newer contemporary works by composers writing for winds today.

In addition to their usual four or five home concerts a year, the Wind Ensemble tours regularly. Under Dr. White they have toured throughout the United States, including much of the upper Midwest, Colorado, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and most recently to Florida in 2011. They have also performed in Canada and the Bahamas.

The Wind Ensemble has performed as part of the Minnesota Music Educators' Convention and in 1985 were the first college ensemble to perform at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota. They completed their last compact disc recording during the spring of 2005, which includes contemporary works by Hazo, Sparke, Cichy, Jocob, Grainger, and Chance.

Musicians in the ensemble have the opportunity to play with a number of fantastic guest artists. Guests in the past have included the American Brass Quintet and the Gaudete Brass Quintet.

Members are selected by audition at the beginning of the year. Interested students should register for MUSC 231, which can be taken for 0 or 1 credit.
