This third annual trip included spending time in Trinidad and Tobago, daily visits to the Cyril Ross Nursery and Amica Home, attending Caribbean studies workshops at the University of the West Indies (UWI), and planning for future collaborations with UWI and the CSA international conference in Kingston Jamica in May 2009.

Trinidad & Tobago 2007

The second trip to Trinidad & Tobago took place January 2 - 11, 2007.  Faculty, staff and students participated in a 3-day workshop "Approaching Men's Studies in a Gender Studies Context:  Cross Cultural Initiatives,"  at the University of the West Indies (UWI).  The workshop brought together over 40 participants including students, staff and faculty from CSB/SJU, colleagues from Hobart William Smith Colleges, Morehouse College and UWI, St. Augustine and Cave Hill campuses.

The goals of the workshop were to bring together students and academics in a cross cultural discussion to give new directions and impetus for the growth and development of men's studies; finalization of the Memorandum of Understanding between CSB/SJU and UWI - St. Augustine;  and the design and implementation strategies for a study abroad program for UWI undergraduate students on leadership and service at CSB/SJU to begin summer 2008.

On the final day of the workshop colleagues agreed to work towards the joint hosting of a cross cultural international conference on masculinity in 2009 to be held at UWI - St. Augustine. With the help of our Admission liaison in Trinidad and Tobago, Feroza Nagassar, a reception was held for the parents and prospective students, alums from both our schools and current CSB/SJU students, faculty and staff.  This gathering, which attracted nearly 40 guests, provided an opportunity for prospective students and their families to meet alums and current CSB/SJU students  and to engage in conversations about their experiences, involvement and stories while attending CSB/SJU.

Students also took part in the Cyril Ross Nursery Service Project.  This included daily visits to the nursery to interact with the children, a soccer fun day and an ice cream party.  SJU Senate President, Kevin May and Vice President, Mark Osborne, presented the orphanage with a $5,000 check, to help with their buidling campaign.  SJU Senate members held many fundraisers in order to provide this generous donation to Cyril Ross.  Click here to find out more.

CSB|SJU Talks with the University of the West Indies

A delegation of CSB/SJU faculty, staff and students went to the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Trinidad and Tobago over break to hold talks on a possible memorandum of understanding between our schools. Patricia Mohammed of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies provided a morning of presentations on the ground breaking research being conducted at the center and its application in public policy in the Caribbean. An example is the work being done on Caribbean Masculinity and changes being made in educational policy to improve the academic performance of boys in the school systems of Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad. Several opportunities for further collaboration were identified by Associate Professor Madhu Mitra of CSB/SJU and Indrani Bachan-Persad, Executive Assistant to the Principal for International Collaboration.

A delegation from UWI attended the 3rd Annual Conference on the College Male in February 2006, led by Tyrone Ali, Assistant Lecturer and Theology Graduate Student Michael Francis Granderson. Collaborative research will be conducted on social normative behavior and student spirituality and UWI will also participate in a project for the men’s studies press on how to effectively establish men’s studies on a college campus. Possible faculty exchanges and student exchanges were explored. These steps will lead to a more formal agreement as all parties agreed this should be an annual visit.

Visiting the Cyril Ross Home

CSB|SJU students took part in a service program organized by the Center for Men’s Leadership and Service at an orphanage for HIV-positive youth. Interestingly, the Cyril Ross Home was the first in the Caribbean to provide a home for these children. The staff hosting the group went through a brief history, described some of their routines and mentioned that the nursery is now in need of expansion. Subsequently, the students who visited the nursery, (Stephaeno Brereton, Cody Fischer, Meera Mansingh, Robert Mevissen, John Mosier, John Ongjoco) have pledged to contribute to the building campaign through a fund raising program in Minnesota with an eye toward a return trip later this year.

The trip also provided the opportunity to host a gathering of students, parents of current and former students, and alums from our two schools.  This was also an opportunity to engage prospective students and our Admission liaison in Trinidad and Tobago, Feroza Nagassar.  She and her husband are the parents of alum.  Iris Cornelius, SJU Board of Regents, welcomed the group and offered her remarks on the significance of the visit for all those involved. Wilt James, who works in the center, was instrumental in all the arrangements and in making this such a successful trip from so many perspectives.
